crazyscot: Selfie, with C, in front of an alpine lake (Default)

We had a spring break this weekend in the resort village of Hanmer Springs.

As you might imagine from the name, it's centred around hot springs which arise from the nearby fault line. They're mostly hot, mineral pools - some of them distinctly sulphurous - with a couple of waterslides for the kids. In the (cooler) freshwater pool I reminded myself that I don't really know how to swim very well. Nevertheless it was mostly keep-the-shoulders-under-water weather as a chill wind blew off the mountains, and it had been lashing down earlier in the day. We did try the 42C pool, which I found too hot, but the 36C pools were most pleasant. What was less pleasant was getting between the pools; the tendons in my feet really didn't like the cold. Still, having been there once, we know more about how it works and can be better prepared next time.

Today we had a quiet morning with some mini golf and a gentle(?) stroll up a forested hill, then went quad-biking. Despite [personal profile] rustica and I having never done anything of the sort before, our guide was patient and even took us up a couple of steep sections. It was an awful lot of fun, and they provided wet gear including waders which proved just what we needed...
